Accessories
Accessorizing is not just an ‘option’ for the true Diva. Accessories will make or break your total look. The biggest mistake the Diva-in-training makes is overdoing or under doing the accessories. Accessories are “eye-catchers” and act as the visual focal point of your entire look. You need to make your accessories work for your look, not against it.
Purse Proportions
Everyone woman has one. Most women have the wrong one. And no I’m not talking about your man. Buying a purse is more than just finding one that is your color or that fits your funky style. Most women don’t take the size of their purse into consideration. The average plus size lady has a purse that is too small. If you’re carrying around a wallet on a string you need to ditch it. The smaller the purse, the larger you’re going to look in contrast to it. Find a purse that is more proportionate to your size. There is no mathematic formula to figure out perfect purse size, so you have to use trial and error. If you’re having trouble with this, take a friend with you to buy a purse. Have your friend use your phone to snap pictures of you with various purses till you find a good match. Another important purse-point to consider is where the purse hangs. If you’re an apple shape you’re going to want to avoid purses with a short strap that sit higher up under your arm making the focal point higher. Apple’s are naturally stacked up top and a higher hanging purse is going to make you look too top heavy. Same goes for lower hanging purses for Pear shapes. (Click here to find out you’re your shape is) When choosing a purse makes sure that it hangs out closer to your flattering features and not your trouble spots.
Earrings
By far my favorite accessory, you could be wearing a paper bag and the right pair of earrings will make you look ready to hit the town. Earrings also have the magical ability to turn business casual attire into a candlelit evening dinner. There is very little you can do wrong with earrings but here are a few things to consider. The shape of your face vs. the shape of your earrings. If you have a naturally round face you’re going to want to avoid big round earrings, or hoops. Instead try to balance it out with something slimmer or square. Subsequently if you have a narrow or long face you’re going to want to balance with a more rounded earring. If you’re going to go for colored earrings remember that your earrings don’t have to match your outfit completely. If you’re wearing an outfit with a pattern try picking up a highlight color instead. Also try a color that compliments your eyes well to draw extra attention to your face.
Here again I have to stress proportions. If you’re wearing a low cut shirt and you have an itty-bitty charm on a chain you’re chest is going to swallow that thing up. That doesn’t mean to say you have to have bling that would make Mr. T jealous. Just consider your proportions when choosing a necklace, bracelet or watch to go with your outfit.
Necklaces are especially helpful in creating the illusion of a longer torso. Avoid necklaces that sit too close to your throat. This will shorten your torso and make you appear more stout. Utilizing varies lengths of necklaces to layer and create visual vertical lines that will make you appear taller, and thinner.

Tips for Formal Wear
Do’s!
To minimize and create the illusion of a smaller midsection, opt for a V-shaped Basque or Antebellum waist. Empire line styles also do well for apples because the raised waistline accentuates the bust and draws the eye upward away from the waist. Higher neckline styles, like a halter neckline, create balance and create extra support in the bust.
Don’ts!
Avoid poofy sleeves apples! You may want to look like a fairy tail princess but the last thing you want is to look like a linebacker. Minimize the shoulders with more modest sleeves and avoid plunging necklines that will make you appear too top heavy.
Pear
Do’s!
A-line and Empire styles work best for pears. V-shaped Basque or Antebellum waist will help minimize hips and midsection. Use wider necklines to create balance with your hips.
Don’ts!
Avoid high cut or halter styles necklines, they will narrow your shoulders and make your hips and waist appear larger. Also avoid large bunching or bows around the hips and butt. Go for a style that drapes subtly over these areas.
Rectangles
Do’s!
Corset type bodices do well to give rectangles the appearance of more curves. Full ball gown type skirts are also a luxury of the rectangle type. However you’re going to want wider necklines to create balance with a fuller skirt.
Don’ts!
Straight cut styles are a no no for the rectangle type. You don’t want to look like a big box. Also avoid high necklines or halter style necklines that are going to make you look to narrow up top.
Hourglass
Do’s!
Most low necklines work for hourglass shapes. V-Neck, Strapless, and scoop style necklines all work well. A-line is a good style for this shape.
Don’ts!
Empire and other straight cut styles don’t flatter the hourglass’ curves. But be careful not to go overboard on ruffled or pleated skirts. Balance is crucial to compliment the curvy hourglass shape.
